Shimano 8 to 9 speed compatibility?(7 posts)

Shimano 8 to 9 speed compatibility?rider5673

I'm in the slow upgrade process and was wondering if anyone out there has experience with Shimano (Ultegra) 8 speed hubs working with new 9 speed cassettes? Or, to go the other way with it,I'm also wondering whether a new 9 speed crank will work with older 8 speed shifters/deraillers- do I just need to change out the inner chainring?
Thanks for the help.

The cassettes and hubs are completely interchangable. You'll need a new, narrower chain. The shifters are the most expensive component that you will have to replace. Assuming you have a double crankset, I'd think you could make it work with the rest of the components that you have now.

Yes, SpokeWrench is right that the cassettes / hubs will work and the chainrings work too. I used a 7 speed DA crank/chainring setup with a 9 speed cluster without any problem.

Do you think if I swith the pulleys of my D/A 7400 Rear der (8spd) to 9 spd pulleys (to accomodate the narrow 9spd chain) it will shift with D/A 7700 series 9spd STI levers? (of course I change to 9spd cogs and chain too.)

The pulley difference is 10 tooth vs. 11 tooth. I am not sure the larger diameter pulley will work with the older cage but it wouldn't be too expensive to try it.
I changed to a 7700 rear der., 7700 shifters, and 7700 chain but kept the front crankset and chainrings on an older C'dale. The shifting on the front wasn't any different than with the older 7 speed chain.
I don't think so.Spoke Wrench

DA also had some derailleur geometry differences that made them incompatable with other Shimano components.

nope, won't work. 8spd and lower Dura-Ace der is different from all other Shimano ders.

see Sheldon on the subject..

briefly,
* Dura-Ace 6-, 7- & 8-speed derailers are interchangeable with one another.
* Non-Dura-Ace 6-, 7-, 8- and 9-speed derailers are interchangeable with one another.
