Campy compatible pre-built wheels question...woodes
Apr 5, 2002 7:48 AM
The only thing I don't like about my Daytona-10 group is the fact that the freehub/cassette on my open pros (daytona hubs) are really LOUD (in other words, the clicking drives me crazy).

My two choices are to never coast or buy a wheelset with a quieter freehub. Are the Campy pre-built wheels (protons in particular) any quieter than my current set-up. What's an affordable alternative to my open pro/daytona set-up that is durable, but annoyingly loud???

Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure whether it's supposed to work this way, but Ibill

re-packed the bearings on my Nucleons, and even though I wiped the grease from the pawls, apparently some remained, because the pawls are a LOT more quiet than they used to be. I've heard that this isn't a great thing, but the hub seems to work fine, and it is a lot quieter.
Grease the pawlsKerry

If you use a light weight grease and don't feel driven to ride in really cold weather, you'll have no problems with pawl engagement and it will be a lot quieter. I've been greasing my Campy cassette pawls for over 30K miles of riding and have had no problems. I admit that I don't ride much below 45 F/7 C. My system is very quiet.
