7701 v. 7700 Dura Ace(5 posts)

7701 v. 7700 Dura Aceelviento
Apr 5, 2002 7:44 AM
I noticed SHimano DUra Ace parts for this year have a few 7701 items, such as the chain, crankset, etc. They look pretty much identical to the 7700 ones.

So what's the story? Any improvement?

It looked to me like Shimano designated 7701 to differentiate from the 7703 triple components, and 7700 was the things in common; this isn't consistent, though, as the 7700 crankset it the timetrial, and the 7701 is the double.

But there is nothing to differentiate, because the triple group uses the same chain as well.

The only change is from 7700 in 1997-2000 to the current 7701. Either there is no technical improvement with just a number change, or there may be some actual improvement. Don't know which is the case.

There is a little difference in the chain. The chainplates are slightly different and the pins all have dimples in the ends of them. This makes the pins look like the connector pin that you aren't supposed to remove after you install the chain.

All components which make up the current 18 speed dura ace group are designated 7700 except for the crank, chain and the new teflon spdr pedals. Parts which make up the triple groupset are 7703 except for the rear derailleur which is still 7700.

THe 7701 chain (as well as HG 93, 73 and 53) "have been improved through the use of a new pin crimping method that increases pin pull-out resistance by 50% compared to previous models". I think I read somewhere that this occured after this happened to the leader of a stage of last year's giro d'italia.

THe crank I am not so sure about. I have both the 1997 and 2002 catalogues and the only difference in the specs is the model designator and the weights:
FC 7700: 579 g for 53/39 175mm
FC 7701: 594 g for 53/59 170mm

I too am curious as to why the model number was changed.
