What do I REALLY need to upgrade to a triple CR?timfire

I was just thinking about some possible upgrades and ways to save money and it got me thinking. What would I REALLY need to upgrade to a triple CR?

Things I'm pretty sure I need:
-Bottom Bracket
-Right Crank (w/ appropiate new chain rings)
-Front Derailer
-Left STI Lever

Things I'm not sure about but (I believe) are included in those "triple upgrade" kits:
-Rear Derailer (Really wondering about this one)
-Left Crank (Pretty sure I don't need this)
-Right STI Lever (Pretty sure on this one too, but not sure)

Basically I was wondering if I could save a little money by buying seperate parts rather than one of those pre-packaged upgrade kits.

The price of buying a right crank and rings separately may be the same or more than mailordering a total crankset. The crank arm angle may not be the same so that might be an issue if its designed to use a longer BB axle. No need to buy a right STI although again the cost of a set is probably not much more. Rear der is a bit tougher. The longer cage on a triple der helps the pick up the slack due to greater range of teeth in front. It might be OK. You could try it and make a determination. You'd probably be better off cost-wise by buying a triple upgrade kit rather than indovidual pieces. Used is another option.

You don't need a front shifter is yours is triple capable, and 9 speed other than pre 2002 DA were.....A short cage rear derailer works fine with a triple, except that due to limited chain wrap capacity, some of the smaller cogs are not usable when in the granny. No problem, since for many the granny is just bailout.

You need a
Crankset (cheaper than right side solo)
rear deraileur (if you don't want to lock up or have chain slack)
You most likely will not need a shifter unless you have Dura Ace or Ultegra.
F.Der is debatable. It will be a liitele wider to prevent chain rub but it is not needed.

You will need to adjuct your f-der lockout screws but that is pretty simple.

Unfortunately you haven't said what you have now. If you now have a Shimano 9-speed double drive train you will need to change the bottom bracket, crank-set with chain rings, both derailleurs, and add some chain. The shifters are the same except with Dura-Ace, even the Ultegra are the same from double to triple. In my mind the bigger question is why. Best change I ever made was upgrading from a triple to a double.
