anyone know where I can get my hands on some? I hear they're pretty hard to come by. I'd rather get some of them instead of buying a new 8 spd casset, chain, shifters etc just to get rid of my downtube shifters :P.

I have 8 speed Shimano RX-100 STI's on my rain bike. The rest of the bike is 7 speed. They work fine. I paid about $50 for them.

Actually, I have 7 sp RSX STIs that are coming off this weekend for an Ultegra upgrade. Decent shape, one small scratch on the Left shifter.

I just made that switch two weekends ago. I went from 7 speed RSX sti to a brand new Ultegra triple (drivetrain only). I've not put enough miles on them yet to make a full judgment, but I'm not sure the changes were as great as I'd expected.

First impressions:

It's not significantly lighter. All I have to measure is a digital bathroom scale that measures to the nearest 1/2 pound. The bike was 21.5 lbs before, and 21.5 after. I'm sure it's a little lighter (an ounce or two), but not much.

The brake levers feel 100% better. I left the RSX calipers on, but the brake feel is much better now.

I think I prefered the rear upshifting on RSX. The Ultegras require more effort, but there is a definite "click" for the shift, where as the RSX just kind of shifted. Maybe I'll get used to it.

The rear down shifting is better on the Ultegras.

The front shifting is cleaner on the Ultegra, but there's more front der. drag on the Ultegra (probably a result of either my poor installation, or having 9 speeds instead of 7).

I've not ridden hills yet, so not comment on the new gearing, but the reason that I switched is to get more top end. WIth RSX, anything above 35 mph was a drift, as the gear was too low to add input.

Let me know what your experience is.

The RSX STI's were great. They have almost a silent shift, that when just crusing around felt just right. In a race I like the new Ultegra 9 speed since the louder shift lets you know that you made the shift when your heart rate is at 190 BPM. In a crash the RSX and all its metal would survive much better than the plastic on the Ultegra. The RSX also have outlasted a couple pairs of 9 speed Ultegra shifters, and still shift like new. The new Sora shifters and all its plastic look like junk that would quickly break. If you can find some RSX on ebay or somewhere grab them.

I have a set in very good condition that I would part with for very little as I am 9-spd now.
