Follow-up to Can I use a tire with a hole? post (I'm alive!)Bruno S

First, thanks to the all of you that replied. I patched the tire and rode it on Wednesday. I did it because I had no time to go buy a new one. The patch prevents the tube from getting damaged but, like grzy said, it will not prevent the cut from increasing in size so its only a matter of time. I will retire it to the trainer wheel.

Sounds like a smart move. You just never know when it's going to go. I road mine with a side wall hole for 200 miles before switching it. And you know it didn't blow until I brought the wheel inside the house to put on the new tire. Three minutes with a 40 degree temp differece and POW! It took me what seem like 30 minutes to get a new tire on that rim. That would really chap a groups ass if they had to wait for you.

The group I ride with doesn't wait for nobody. On the contrary it seems that the whole goal of the ride is to drop as many people as possible. But the ride is very tight, sometimes riding three abreast, so it could be dangerous to ride with that tire. Actually, one of my worst fears is that, for example, the chain snaps during a hill while the mayority of the group is behind me (50-70 riders). I'm just not sure what I would do. With a flat you can continue moving until you are clear to stop but with a chain failure....
