Bar end shifters for a 6-speed bikeSwimmeruk

I have an old Kestrel 4000 and would like to move the down tube shifters up to my bar ends. All of the bar ends say that they are compable with 8 speed or 9 speed? any ideas? I can't upgrade the shifting because it is a 126mm hub on the back wheel. Thanks
Chad
All Shimano barends have a friction option...cory

If you don't have to index, any Shimano barcon setup will work. I have them on an old six-speed Trek, a seven-speed Specialized and my Atlantis. Don't think you can index them on six-speed, though.

if you have 6sp indexed dt, then buy 8 or 9spd barends, and bolt the rh 6spd shifter onto the barend in place of the supplied shifter. I bought dura-ace 9sp barends, and put a Sora 8spd dt shifter on for the rear der. Works fine. The barends just give you a standard shifter boss on the barends instead of on the dt, so pretty much any dt shifter can be bolted on..
