Shimano / Campy(4 posts)

Shimano / Campyshamen

Looking to get a new group set to hang on my "Project" bike.
Coming from Mountain biking I have always used Shimano both my current road bikes have the Big S hanging in them (105 and Ultegra). It looks like Campy's Record is the Groupset to have at the moment against Dura-ace and that Chorus groupset also heads up over Ultegra. Is the extra cost of these groupsets over their Shimano equivilant worth it in terms of performance and weight? I love the look of the Record Carbon levers but feel that having a groupset thats compatible with my current bikes for wheel changes etc might be more practicle.
been hashed over too many times...C-40

Try riding a Campy ergo equipped bike to see if you like the levers. They're different and have advantages over Shimano's design (multiple shifts to smaller cogs with a single push of the thumb button). Not everyone likes them though.

Campy's groups have ten speeds. If you ride hilly terrain, the 12-25 cassette which includes the 16T (unlike shimano) is great. I used an 11-23 for two years and found the 11 to be worthless. I don't need a 25 often, but it's handy at times, particularly in the early season.

The 10 speed chain has been a source of complaint, but I've never had a problem with it. To avoid buying a $60 campy permalink installation tool, Wipperman chains are now available in 10 speed models at Excel Sports.

If you have wheels that are of significant value, you might want to stay with shimano, but how long do you think it will be until the shimano hubs become obsolete? Surely shimano will come out with something new soon.

Most folks compare the Daytona group to Ultegra (same price) and Chorus to DuraAce. Record is in a class by itself. Chorus is the best value. Most of the parts are Record level of a few years ago. Chorus is a few ounces heavier than DuraAce, but it also costs less. At equal prices, at least one Record level upgrade can be made to the chorus group.

I have heard that you can get cog sets that can convert shimano to Campy (I don't know if this includes 10 speed though. Anyone know who does them and what the model is called and costs?

Is chorus lighter than Ultegra?
