Couple of things to watch out for. Everything else you can pretty much do over until you get it right.

1. Don't cut your steer tube when you are tired. Be sure that you are alert, think it through and measure twice. There's a technical term for cutting a steer tube too short, but I'll use an alternate word here "screwed".

2. Every time that you fit all of the parts together for trial fittings etc. be sure that the neoprene seals (if any) are safely tucked away where they belong. Once they get stretched out, it's kind of like putting toothpaste back in the tube.
