|I am upgrading to Ultegra cranks and BB soon, will my 2 speed Tiagra shifters work for a 3 ring setup? I've heard Ultegra shifters work for 2 or 3 ring cranks. Do tiagra also? I'll probably just stay with a two ring setup and increase my casette to a 28 or 30 when my 12- 25 wears out. But , I just want to keep all my options open. And yeah... I realize I would have to replace my deraillers if I switched to a 3 ring setup|

|Not too long ago, I converted a Tiagra drivetrain to an Ultegra. In the process, I changed from a triple up front to a double. The shifters have enough stops to handle either a double or a triple. But, unless there is something really clever I don't know about, the front derailleurs are specific to the number of chainrings.
Actually, the Tiagra shifters perform extremely well and are very dependable. They weigh more than Ultegra shifters but, if you are short on cash (Ultegra shifters cost around $175), you can make do with them. The shifters may be the best part of the Tiagra group.
