8 speed STI and 7 speed compatibility ?(6 posts)

8 speed STI and 7 speed compatibility ?pogo

Will an 8 speed STI shifter work with a 7 speed drivetrain. I am not yet ready to switch the whole drivetrain and I am considering buying an 8 speed shifter.
Any potential problems?

7 speed shimano spacing is 5.0mm and 8 is 4.8mm. 8 speed shimano shifters usually shift a 7 speed cassette ok. Pre 9 speed Dura Ace shifters and derailers have to be used together due to unique cable pull derailer throw ratios. Why not bite the bullet and do 9 speed? But, 9 speed shifters won't work on the 7 speed cassette.
It depends on your standards.nee Spoke Wrench

It will kind of work. The cog spacing is a bit different for 7 and 8 speed cassettes so the cable pull at the shifter isn't exactly right for the cassette. You usually have to make a double shift at some point on the cassette.

I got an 8 speed cassette and use it with 7 speed, downtube shifters and a 7 speed derailleur. It shifts well and requires little adjusting once I got the limit screws set right.

My rain bike has this setup. I'm using 7 speed 105 components with 8 speed RX100 STI shifters. It works fine
