I know one Cat 2 racer who rides 105 because he thinks it's a great value. Ultegra is better but 105 is good.

I asked this question not too long ago and spent the extra couple bucks for an Ultegra gruppo (ok, couple hundred). The 105 is great gruppo for the price and is not too much different from the Ultegra in function. The Ultegra does have a better finish and is a bit lighter, though.

The 1500 dollar range is very competitive, esp if you look for a 2001 bike. You can get a very good bike that you will enjoy for a long time until the upgrade bug hits you.

FWIW I started off with a used Trek with an RSX gruppo and it is still superior to my abilities as a cyclist.
