I have the opportunity to purchase a new bike (Giant TCR1) with either a Mavic Cosmos or Shimano 535 wheelset. Going by the manufacturers claimed weights the Mavics are 120 grams lighter however the Shimano are more aero.

What kind of riding are you doing? Daily dallies 'round the block, group rides, crits, road races? All of the above? And just how big are ya? I think between those two I would go w/ the lighter wheels (I almost always err on the side of less rotational weight), but that's JMHO!
Good luck, and enjoy your new bike if you get it-I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my *new* Ciocc Com 12.5, a real steel frame (w/ carbon fork). Can't wait! :)

|If possible, you'll save money by just getting "standard" wheels and not sacrifice anything to weight or speed. Open Pros or Velocity Aeroheads on DA or Chorus hubs would be lighter, just as durable, and cost less. FYI, a set of truly aero wheels might save you 3-4 minutes in a 100 mile ride. Important if you're racing, but otherwise insignificant. If you have to choose between the MAVIC and Shimano, go MAVIC. The S-535 has not been getting rave reviews (rather heavy for the price, nothing to write home about) and MAVIC certainly knows how to build wheels.|| |
