CAAD5 or CAAD7?(7 posts)

CAAD5 or CAAD7?2kw
Dec 31, 2001 7:01 AM
I am considering for my next bike either the Cannondale R3000 or R5000. The main difference between the two (aside from frame material) seems to be that the 5000 has Cannondale's integrated "hollowgram" crankset which is a good deal lighter and supposedly stiffer than a DA unit. Do any of you C'dale owners have any experience with this crankset? How does the durability and serviceability compare to DA? Any thoughts or advice would be most helpful.

Peace.

Its actually CAAD5 and CAAD6. I own both the hollowgram crankset on my 4000si and the durace cranks on my trek. The hollowgram is lighter and I haven't noticed any difference in stiffness. They are both completely flex-free. I'm 180 and climb a lot on the hollowgram cranks. I'd get the hollowgram equipped bike. It'll be lighter overall. By the time any potential issue comes up with replacement parts 15 years from now, your bike will be worn out anyway.

does not the coda crank also not use a proprietary BB with press fit bearings and proprietary spindle design that you are also stuck with for 15 years, and does not prrmit use of any other crank design?? Just MHO,but your money, not mine.

BB yes. Spindle is licensed from Shimano. You'll be happy unless you want to switch to Campy, but I doubt you'd want to switch. I previously said I'd opt for the Coda equipped bike. If all other coponants are equal, I still suggest this approach.

.....I'm wrong, but the picture of a crank and it's spline pattern on Cdales new catalogue doens't look like shimano.Cdale 'splines are rounded,Shimano are square.Shimano did liscense Cdale to make 'some' cranks with the shimano spline pattern though.

This should be a CAAD5 or CAAD6. I own both the DA and Hollowgram. I like the Hollowgram, have had approximately 1 year, serviced once. I have had absolutely no problems.

One correction. I just came from the Cannondale website. It looks like they have released their CAAD 7 frame with the hollowgram parts.
