I just wondered at what level is Shimano RSX on the new scale of products from Sora to Dura-Ace?

I currently have RSX (down-tube shifting) and am planning to get a new STI equipped bike, mainly for triathlon, but also for road training rides and occasional road racing and time-trial.

Should I get Tiagra or 105? (As a 16yr old junior I'm not made of money so what's gonna do the job effectively with no frills?)

RSX was bottom end 7 speed STI when other groups were 8 speed. A later generation RSX was also low end 8 speed STI.Soa is current low end 7 and 8 sped, and many think the shifters suck. If RSX has been serving your needs,Tiagra also ought to work.At the seven speed level, there was also a strictly downtube shifter exage group that was below RSX for a while.

Go with the 105, you cannot go wrong. The STI shifting with 105 is crisp and accurate. The components are sturdy and reliable and need very little maintenance. After three seasons of riding the 8 speed 105 gruppo, and well over six thousand miles, I inspected everything and found that I needed to tighten the rear brake a bit...that was it!
get 105 or better...C-40

Shimano components below 105 won't last long if you're logging any serious mileage. If yu can possibly afford it, stay with 105 or better.

RSX was a solid workhorse. Heavy, yet well regarded for durability. Plenty of RSX-equipped bikes from the early 90s are still going strong. Nashbar and some other places still offer RSX 8 spd shifter set that can be used with a double or a triple crank.

Tiagra can do the job affordably and with no frills, just weigh a little more. Some folks assume less durability, and perhaps that is true. But as you continue to outgrow bikes, or upgrade, component swaps are just part of the game. So, do what you can afford without financial stress. That being said, there's no question that 105 is a better gruppo. Lighter, crisper shifting, and perhaps better longevity. But no need to cater to the knee jerk "only get 105 or above" if it isn't in your budget. That's just oversimplified.

My two cents, anyway.
105 is certainly better, but RSX is solidcory

I'm with the previous poster--I've had RSX on an old Allez Sport somebody gave me at least seven or eight years ago, and it's never missed a shift. Mine is seven speed, and I've beat the crap out of it with little maintenance beyond an occasional shot of lube. It just keeps on clicking. If that's what you can get, at least you can ride it and not worry about it.
