Ksyrium SSL's - milling weight(5 posts)

Ksyrium SSL's - milling weightDog

The new Ksyriums are supposedly milled at the rim to reduce weight, stated as "-40g" on the Mavic website.

The "old" Ksyriums were quoted at 700/900g for clinchers. The new ones are quoted as "700 clincher: Front 690g / Rear 840g".

Why does the milling remove 10g from the front and 60g from the rear? Doesn't make sense.

I suspect the answer is that the old K's never weighed only 700g for the front, which confirms my measurement of around 725-730g. Sound right? Anyone weighed these yet?

The difference in weight is in the freewheel body..the newer SL wheel has the FTS-L hub and that reduces the weight in the rear.It replaces a bearing w/ a low friction ring and that further reduces the weight by 40 grams.
Sure, it makes sense ...pmf1

They just mill more from the rim used to build the rear wheel than the one used to build the front wheel :}

I weighed a set I had and it was a bit under 1700 grams. I forget exactly how much. Generally, I feel embarrassed to be so anal as to weigh things. These were purchased in early 2000 or late 1999 (I forget when ... Ksyruims were pretty new at the time). Grizzmonkey claims that as more were produced, the weight went up because the tooling used to machine the rims wore down. I have no idea if that's true, but I'm sure he'd be happy to argue about it.

I have a pair of Heliums that were supposed to weigh 700/900 too. I guess its SOP to lie about weights. They must produce a few sets of 24'' tubulars, weigh them and list that as the claimed weight.

Isn't there a website that lists component/wheel weights?

Mavic has a tendency to lie about their wheel weight. I have both the heliums and ksyriums (2001), and the front on both weighted 700 grams, and the rear helium was 730, and the ksyrium was 740.
Note: this is without skewers.

I've had open pros crack on me, so too light a wheel scares me. speed dream is 1420 grams a pair, if i weighted 100 lbs, I might buy them.
