What is the purpose of the large, square, resin (plastic) cleat that came with my Campy Daytona pedals? Is this to keep you from walking on the metal cleat? Is it possible to mount them without it?

Thanks...

I use Campy Daytona pedals on one of my bikes and I am very pleased with them. You have to use the plastic pro-fit cleat (that works much like a Look cleat) because the front part goes into the front part of your pedal, just as a Look cleat operates. The metal bracket that holds the metal cleat must go in the plastic cleat. The plastic part is not good for walking (what road pedal is?) and, if left unprotected, will wear down quickly. But the little metal cleat and its accompanying bracket should last a long time.
