XT Rear Derailleur for Cross?(3 posts)

XT Rear Derailleur for Cross?Fred the Cross Poser

Hey folks -

H'mmm, what to buy... an XT or Ultegra triple rear derailleur...

Is there any advantage to running an ATB rear derailleur instead of an road derailleur for cross? I use the bike for non-paved rail trails where everything seems to get filled with the fine cinder dust. I am a bit concerned about the ultegra rear derailleur's ability to stand up to dirt.

Here is the current setup:

- Shimano 600 52/42 crankset
- Shimano 600 rear derailleur (getting very tired...).
- Ultegra 9 speed cogset
- Tiagra Hub

I will be replacing the crankset with an Ultegra triple in the future.

Thanks in advance for your help!
ONLY reason would be if u used a cog over 27tstr8dum1

my cross bike is full nine speed ultegra with an xt rear der. the xt is built more solidly than the ultegra. all of the pivots are heavier/beefier and the body of the derailleur itself is a bit more rugged. if you are racing cross, go with the xt. i crashed over a barrier and didn't so much as blemish the xt. if you are just riding the rail trail, the ultegra would be fine. if it's time to replace it anyway, get an xt short cage, it'll last longer!
