New vs. old brake question(5 posts)

New vs. old brake questionbrake?
Nov 16, 2001 12:52 PM
I am building my first road bike, and have found a deal on a set of older 105 brake calipers, they are new, are visually the same as the new ones, and came from a 105 8 speed group of which year I dont know. They are about half the price of a discounted 2001 set, and I was wondering if they are worth it, is there a performance difference between the 2. Thanks

If they're the dual pivot variety, you've found yourself a good deal. You should probably replace the pads before riding on them, however.

Brakes is brakes. It's all about leverage and this hasn't changed since dual pivots. Posh ones are shinier, old ones are, well, older, but there's no difference in how they all work. Get them and roll in all your saved money.

Going to buy them, want to get the bike built but I just had my ACL reconstructed so it will be a few months before I am ready to ride.
