CAAD5 Headset(8 posts)

I'm going to buy a Cannondale, either CAAD4 or CAAD5. I can get the CAAD5 w/Ouzo pro fork for $170 more than a CAAD4 w/prodigy fork (carbon/Al).

I'm interested in experiences with the CAAD5 headset. I realize the upside, lighter weight. What, besides increased cost, are the downsides?

Thanks, Eric

Downside stuck buying only SI headsets, but they're made by Campy so it shouldn't be an issue. If you want spacers they now make a special tapered carbon one for integrated headsets.

Upside: I'm betting that besides being lighter, the Ouzo Pro is a better handling fork. Totally love mine.

Other than that the frames are identical.

I understand from my former boss that the Campy integrated HS has been a bit of a failure. He noted that the Cane Creek was a disaster last year, and the Campy was having the same problems this year.

Probably has a lot to do with supplier relations and getting beaten down on price.

Why would anyone want to lock themselves into a particular design with very few alternatives? Typical of a large playing trying to dictate the direction of an industry that has very few design standards. The people in high tech have already learned this lesson, but sometimes the status quo does need to be shaken up.

I had a caad5 frameset earlier this year. There was nothing wrong with the HS other than the overly stiff fork attached to it.

YMMV

Ditto on what CT1 says, I just sold a CAAD5 frame with the
Campy integrated headset that had many many miles on it and
never had a problem.

I have both a CAAD5 and CAAD6 with Campy integrated head set. Have had both for over a year, no problems.

Why not pay a little more(less than $170) if your getting your frame from a dealer, and get the all carbon Slice fork that comes with the upper end CADD5's and 6,s. It's made by Time, I believe its basically a Time Millinium fork.
I have a Cadd6 with said fork and Record headset, no problems in a year of riding.
