|How difficult is it to replace a Campy 10-speed chain?||tarwheel|

|I suspect that my Campy 10-speed chain may need replacing soon, although it may just need a good cleaning. It's got about 3,000 miles and is starting to shift a little rough at times. I wipe the chain clean after nearly every ride, lube it once a week with ProLink, and clean with degreaser about once a month. I measured the chain (on my bike) and it doesn't appear to have any stretch, although that might be hard to determine with the chain on the bike. |
I am not the most mechanically inclined person, although I can change tires proficiently and rewrap my bars. I also have a bike workstand and a Zinn guide. Would replacing the chain be a doable task for someone with limited mechanical skills or knowledge? I understand that I would need to buy the Campy chain tool, but it would be much less expensive to order the tool and a new chain on-line than it would be to have it done at my LBS. Also, if these chains need replacing every 3,000 miles, I figure it's something I ought to learn how to do.

|remove it, lay it out, measure the new one against the old, take off links to make the new one the same length on the old, re-thread it through the derailers (carefully, and use the Zinn book for a diagram; although it seems hard to mess up this part, more than one would-be wrench who thought he knew better has threaded the chain through the rear incorrectly). and snap on that Perma-link. One good thing about Campy parts is that they tend to come with pretty good directions -- read those, too. When you do snap it in, you will know it. If you just think you've snapped it in, you haven't snapped it in. It's almost a "thunk" sound. |
The tool is $60.00 pretty much everywhere. Killed me to buy it, but I figure I'll have it a long time. I'm not sure that you'll save any real money by doing it yourself, but if you want to do it, do it.
3,000 miles sounds about right, depending on conditions, although some have claimed to get a lot more out of a chain, including the Campy 10. I had one for almost that long before it snapped on me at the Perma-Link while I was trying to sprint up in the big ring. Could have been a bad installation, I suppose, although it was put on by a reliable shop. The one that I installed has been fine (many fewer miles on that one, though).

|Remember to break it at the Permalink so you can reuse the chain if it is OK without having to have 2 PL's in the chain. Easy to do - just use a normal chain tool & push the permalink pins out from the frame side. They will "break" out of the PL.
Then just use another PL, Superlink III or if you are game (many are just not me) join like a normal chain.

|Seems a bit early for this chain.... unless your lube cycle is a little light.
When you do change the chain just assemble it without the PL.
