Hello at my bike shop they have a four year old schwinn 654, aluminum frame with shimano lx sport components. It shifts really crisply which I like and all the components seem like quality items. I am not familiar with the shimano road component line, ( I have c-dale f1000 so i am new to road). If you can give me any advice on the value of this bike, the components, and where they lie on the component line up of shimano i would be really grateful.
Thanks
Drew

I doubt its only four years old. I had a '91 354 which was a cheaper version of their USA-made 5000 series AL bikes which I presume this is. I seem to recall Schwinn stopped making them soon thereafter after they went belly-up (the first time). Its likely this frame is spaced for 7-speed so upgrading will be a problem. LX sport components no longer exist. As a wild guess I'd say its worth $400 or less.

There's gotta be a good reason why it's still there. Bottom line: you can get sweet deals on current stuff and it works better and is lighter. How does it fit?

Possibly a better way to approach the bike buying process is to decide in advance what your budget is and find out what sizes fit. Then figure out what bikes you like and shop around until you can find the best deal on your choices. A good deal on something that doesn't fit or isn't right for you isn't much of a deal.
