Has anyone heard of long term durrability issues with bonded tube and lug carbon frames? Specificaly the early 90's Specialized Alez Carbon. Further are they regarded as a decent frame? I had one years ago as my first roadbike and I have an oportunity to pick up a used one cheap, but I want to make sure it wont fall apart or something

The old Specialized and Trek bonded carbon bikes will break at the bonds. Or rather, become de-bonded. I had quite a business going building carbon fiber headset spacers from the tubes of dead Trek and Specialized frames- I never had a shortage of raw material. This was long before said spacers were available on the market.

I know one guy (150lbs) racer that WAS racing on a '90 (around) Carbon specialized Allez and hasn't had eny problem, he still use it for training.

The Specialized rep once explained to me why all of those frames would someday break- and he promised to give all the broken ones to me. It was some fancy science explaination that I didn't pay attention to. They do have a lifetime warranty for the original owner though...

A buddy and I bought Specialized Allez Epics at the same time. He was 220 lbs, I was 150. His came disbonded at the right chainstay/BB junction. Mine was fine, and I eventually sold it for about $150 (frame, fork, headset, and seatpost). I remember seeing one guy at the TT Nationals (the second year they came to Seattle) who was RIDING one that had disbonded at the top tube/head tube junction. He just used a bunch of nylon reinforced packing tape to repair it, and had been riding it for some time. Blew me away. The problem is with moisture entry into the bond, causing galvanic corrosion and eating away the bond. The overcoat was pretty thin, and would routinely crack, allowing moisture in.

Check for broken fibers around where the chainrings pass the horizontal seat stay. It's pretty easy for a dropped chain to start tearing this up - finallly got my buddy to replace his with a Kestrel. Frankly those old Specialized bikes aren't that good - why would you want to spend the time and money on one? Sort of along the lines of trying to keep a 386 PC going.
