Campy 8-9 compatibility(4 posts)

Campy 8-9 compatibilityBudhaSlug

I have a bike built with campy athena 8 (about 92-94 stuff I'd guess) which is starting to wear out. I'm planning on switching to Daytona 9 come spring (for winter the bike is going to be on the trainer so I want to hold off). The problem is that I recently lost one of the caps to my rear derailleur pulleys, and instead of spending the $25 to get a new set of pulleys, I was wondering if it would be possible for me to simply get the Daytona 9 RD, and run the rest of the bike with the old athena 8 till I buy the rest of the 9 speed group. Alternatively, if I buy the daytona 9, are the pulley systems similar enough that I might be able to temporarily canabilize the daytona pulleys for parts and then rebuild it when I get the entire 9spd system in the spring. Anyone with any other thoughts on the best and cheapest way to go about this... till I get it fixed, I'm stuck with just my fixed gear.

Thanks,
Peace and Light,
Ben

I'm guessing I'll have to run a 9spd chain to match up with the pulleys?

Thanks

I doubt there's much difference. I'd try it with your current chain and see how it shifts. If you're happy with it, you're set. If not, 9 speed chains are easy enough to find.
