A friend offered to sell me an 8 speed dura ace shifter but told me it would only work with a dura ace rear derailleur. Is this true? I was hoping to use my XT derailleur already on my cross bike.

I would think the Dura Ace shifter/XT rear derailluer combo should work just fine on your bike. I have the same set-up on my road bike: all Dura Ace using an XT rear der and cassette for hill climbing ability.

PRE-9 speed DA shifters and derailers worked only with each other due to unique cable pullderailer throw reatios. My 8 speed DA barend shifters have a label on them saying..."compatible only with DA rear derailer".

Rusty: My Trek 540 Touring comes with Dura Ace barends and an LX rear der, no problems.

Just relating MY own experience with using PRE 9 speed DA shifters with derailers other than PRE 9 speed DA....did not work. That's what shimano and Sheldon Brown say too. Your mileage aparently differs.

If your drivetrain is 8 speed, then my Trek catalogue says the 8 speed barends on it are ULTEGRA,with an LX rear deeailer. Thought something was not right.
