Need help: Cane Creek ZS Headset on Giant Bike(6 posts)

Need help: Cane Creek ZS Headset on Giant Bikekolby
Sep 27, 2001 10:02 AM
I'm riding a Giant TCR1. I love the bike, but can't get the headset adjusted properly. It is either loose or locks up when I'm out of the saddle. It ruins my ride karma. I've seen someone (TCR01??) post a message about getting the bearings replaced. Who do I contact about that?
Any help would be appreciated,

Contact either the shop where you got your bike from, Giant, or Cane Creek.

...that sounds really odd for a headset on a road bike. You might want to have your LBS look at it first so you have more to say to either Giant or Cane. How old is it? I've battered the hell out of my fully-rigid cheapy mtb across ten or so years and the bearing are still good. As though the trails weren't bad enough, I never cleaned the thing, and for some of those years I left it out in torrid rain across several seasons. The damn thing doesn't deserve to be in such good shape. Go figure.

I spoke with Joe Ward at Cane Creek b/c I had the same problem with my TCR zero. The problem is that Cane Creek had this problem with the early production runs on the ZS. They have since changed the contact angles on the bearings and contact plates. You can contact Joe at and he should provide you with a new bearing kit. It will allow you to use the existing cups. You will have to change the contact race on the fork, the bearing and the compression ring. It is an easy fix and Cane Creek was very good with its customer service.
