|hello I just got a new frame and it came with a huge warning note saying that the bb threads had NOT been chased and that i needed to take the bike to a LBS. I am confortable installing the bb but I never had to "chase" the threads...what do they mean, and how hard is it... Is this one of those things that the actual fact that I am asking about it means that I NEED to take it to a bike shop? Or can it be easily done? Thanks. nestor|

|Basically, chasing means cleaning the threads of manufacturing debris (paint, slag, etc).
I assume you do not have the proper tool, or know how to use it, since you are asking the question. The tool is expensive, and very specific. Unless you are planning to open a bike shop, the purchase of the chasing/facing tool is very expensive. Pay the bike shop mechanic $10 and give him the responsibility of doing it right. If you do it and screw up, you're SOL. If they screw up, they can owe you a new frame.
