105 crankset question(2 posts)

105 crankset questionEd

Does anyone know the difference between the FC-5500 and the FC-5501 Shimano 105 cranksets (or for the triple, the difference between the FC-5503 and FC-5504)? Is one "hollowtech" and the other not? Is one for a splined BB and the other for a square BB?

In other words, what exactly am I getting with the FC-5501 that makes it better than the FC-5500.

Thanks for any help you can provide ...

I'm not sure about the splined vs. squared BB., but I know that the FC-5501 crankset is a Hollowtech version of the FC-5500. Hollowtechs are generally lighter, but I have heard of some guys cracking/splitting the cranksets during hard efforst. Dangerous!
