Campy bottom bracket and Univega Frame?(7 posts)

Campy bottom bracket and Univega Frame?BikerBill
Sep 12, 2001 7:27 AM
Hello, I'm new to road bikes and am building up a new 2001 univega modo volare (sp?) frame and bought a campy bottom bracket which does not seem to want to hand thread into the frame. I just wanted to check if anyone knows if the threads on these should be compatable before I touch it with a wrench. It's the cheap $20 campy square taper BB.
Thanks!

Bottom brackets have two common threads and sizes in North America. Italian and English. Frames threaded for one can not use the other. Generally, current frames made outside of Italy use English threading, and most Italian made frames require Italian BBs. Chances are you have the wrong BB for the frame

So are all Campy bottom brackets Italian thread?

No. Both Campy and Shimano make both types of bottom brackets. Some time ago, there was a post about the different thread pitches of Italian and English bottom brackets. 1.370" (34.8mm) X 24 or 1.375" (34.92mm) X 24 for English, and 36mm (1.417") X 24 for Italian. Also, Italian BBs' cups are both right hand thread, and the drive side cup of the english is left (reverse) threaded, and the non-drive side cup is right (normal) threaded.

Chances are that the Univega (made in Taiwan) uses a english bb. The Campy BB you have should have the threading size written on it. If not, look at the treads closely. If they are identical (same direction) you have a Italian. If they are mirrored, then you have english. Calipers can also be used to measure the diameter of the cups.
Thanks, nmBikerBill

I built up a 2001 Modo framed Univega Modo Vincere [same frame - triple]. It has english thread; takes a 68/111 bottom bracket. I used a Campy AC-H, the cheap $20.00 one, that works well. Incidently, the frame rides great.
Thanks, I got it in last night and It was the right thread. (nm)BikerBill
