I have and ultegra splined bb. the axel is centered when measured from the seat tube to the end of the axel. when i install the crank, the non-drive side crank is 3mm farther from the seat tube than the drive side. can anyone help with this?

You have to be careful when installing Shimano splined cranksets to be sure the splines are mated correctly on the BB spindle. It's easy to do incorrectly. Shimano had a notice out about this several months ago.

The penalty for not aligning the splines properly is a ruined crankarm which is not a manufacturing defect and not a warranty item.

It is advised that you remove the bolt cap/self extractor and bolt, and align the crank in the splines. It is easy to damage the splines in the crank, so extra care must be taken. Even the best mechanics screw this up.
