Shimano - Campy mix compatability(5 posts)

Shimano - Campy mix compatability'mmm Donuts!

Are any Shimano and Campy components compatible. Is there any possible way to do a gradual changeover from Shimano to Campy?

Thanks for the tips!
Well, I have 8 speed Shimano with a Campy 8 rear wheeljw25

and it works just fine. The shifts aren't as crisp, but I think that's a function of the Shimano cog ramps.
The bike is all older 105 components, and the wheel is a Mavic Cosmic. Since the cassette is all loose cogs, and I bought everything used, the last owner might have swapped spacers, but I know the differences are small, on the order of .1mm per cog.
Can't help with the newer 9 speed parts, though. You should be able to get a Campy mini-gruppo (shifters, rear derailleur, and rear hub/wheel), and they should work with Shimano cranks. It's not very gradual, but it'll get you there.

I guess it is possible to run a campy cassette on with a shimano drivetrain but it will be very unpredictable. You are risking your chain skipping as well as missing some shifts. Just bite the bullet and go all the way to campy or upgrade your Shimano gradualy. Is there a reason you want to change?

The usual thought is that you can run whatever crank & chainrings you want, with any rear setup. The issues arise with derailleurs, shifters, and cassettes that don't match. As long as the crankset doesn't have some wacky "Q" factor, it ought not to matter...
I sure hope it's true, because my current project bike will have a front Ultegra derailleur running a Campy Veloce crank. The rear is all Ultegra 9-speed.
I'm running Dura-Ace Bar end shifters, so I don't forsee any problems with STI- related click shifting in the front.
Should be built up this by this weekend... we'll see if it all works.
