I currently have 7spd downtube index shifting on my old road bike and would like to upgrade everything to 9spd Ultegra with STI shifters. Is this possible? I'm a little confused as to the logistics, such as what attaches to the holes in the frame when the old shifters are removed. Could use some enlightenment.

Thanks

It's possible. Check your rear dropout spacing first. 9 speed needs 130mm. you may have it as alot of later 7 speeds were. If it's not 130 and the rear stays are AL or CF,they don't like to be bent. Cable stops replace the shift levers and come as standard with new STI shifters(at least they use to). there are actually no holes in the frame, there are studs called brazeons or shifter bosses.
