crown race on a Ultegra/DA cartridge bearing headsetHank

I know Shimano makes a little adapter thingy so you won't deform them when you whack them on with the slide hammer, but I'm lazy and don't feel like going to the shop and trying to borrow it and I don't like other people touching my bike - so has anybody ever installed one of these without damaging it (it's a funky shape--not like an old school race--and looks somewhat delicate) or have any tips, or should I just get off my butt and go get the right tool for the job? Thanks in advance.

I've done it with a pipe that's slightly larger than the steerer tube. I've found the Dura Ace is easier to install because it's alloy
not steel. The Ultegra headset I have uses a steel race that is very difficult to get to the bottom.
