9 spd derailleur in an 8 spd system(5 posts)

9 spd derailleur in an 8 spd systemThat 1 Dude

A friend of mine replaced his worn 8 spd Ultegra derailleur with a newer 9 spd. His shifting is compromised. He says the other components are worn. I say the derailleur is not compatible, after all, the 9 spd upgrade kits include the rear derailleur. Surely, Shimano wouldn't be trying to make us needlessly upgrade our equipment. Does anyone have the technical specifics to clear this issue?

Shimano claims that a 9 speed will work with a 8 speed, but I have not actually tried it.

yes, shimano claims 9spd rd works on 8spds. I've replaced my 8spd D/A rear with a 9spd rear, on a full D/A 8spd set-up. yes, shifting is not as good on a full 8spd grp. I spent hours dialing it in, and after I did, changing cassettes would require tons of adjustment again. I'm now saving up to get a full 9spd set-up, till then I'll have to make do with this.
Yes it works- the rear cable attaches differentlyDave Hickey

The rear cable attaches differently for 8 speed. Instead of the cable going under the bolt, the cable attaches on top of the bolt. The 9 speed D/A instructions show how to do it. If you put the cable on top of the bolt, it shifts perfectly for 8 speed

Thank you for the enlightenment. I'll inform my buddy of the prognosis.
