|The saddle fore-aft adjustment is supposed to be used to alter the knee over pedal position (KOP). Go to coloradocyclist.com or see the latest issue of Bicycling Magazine for an explanation of KOP position. If you're currently using a post like a Thomson or other brand without setback, you may indeed need a different post, but not to adjust the reach to your bars.
The stem length should be selected after the KOP is established. It can take take a lot of riding and experimentation to find your optimum KOP position. If your ignore KOP you may never reach the level of proficiency that you desire. I see this all the time. People ride for years without a clue about how to set up a bike for maximum efficiency.
