park tool chain checker. tells you exactly how much chain stretch you got going on. I also think its a good idea to remove factory chain grease. Soak your new chain in paint thinner for a few hours rinse it off and let it dry before using real chain lube.

You can do the same thing with a 49-cent ruler. Put the end of it right on a pin in the chain, stretch the chain down and look at the 12-inch mark on the ruler. In a new chain, it will bisect a pin. If it's more than 12-1/8 inch, replace the chain.

yeah i bought one of these in my *gotta have every bike specific tool* phase. nifty little tool & so is the park pizza cutter :) still use the 12" crescent on the headsets though.
