Shimano 600 STI shifter fix??Shawn Luther

I have an STI shifter which is not working correctly. The shifter for shifting into smaller cogs on the rear does not work unless I pull it towards the bar before clicking it. It does not engage otherwise. Is there a way to adjust it??

As far as a straight forward adjustment goes, the short answer is "No." Chances are high, from your description, that one of the main screws used to connect the small lever to the big lever (in a relative way) is either loose or missing. It is fairly common especially if you've crashed on that lever. You may luck out and tighten or replace the screw (it's metric threaded), but the odds are against you. If you're really good at working with small delicate mechanisms and have a bunch of time and patience you could try rebuilding it. However, having done it I honestly can't avise it - it's right up there with Swiss watches on level of difficulty. If you go to shimano.com and go over to the Urup section you get the part numbers of the sub-assemblies and replace it. Probably best to take it to a good LBS first and see what the top dog mechanic thinks. You may have a much more simple probelm/solution than what I've described. Good luck!

THe shifter does work as long as I pull it towards me when I shift so I am going to try adjusting the screw first.
