I am sure this has been covered somewhere on the board, but I can't find it. Anyways, simple question - would a 9 spd crank (Shimano) work with an existing 8 spd. drivetrain (Shimano)? Thanks!

Yes it works fine. The only problem you might have is chain rub when you're on the inside chain ring and the smallest rear cog

You can use a 9 speed chain which will work better for the chainrings and won't matter for the rear cogs.

I've heard the opposite from LBS types, but haven't tried it. They were saying that a 9 sp. chain on an 8 cassette resulted in poor shifting. Seems like you have been successful, no? Any particulars as to brand & models of components - I'd like to know which combos DO work for future info.
Thanks all for the info. and insight!froryde
