Pedal loose, not sure how.Groucho Marx

The left pedal seems to be loose. I'm not exactly sure how to fix it, it isn't the actual thread in the crank arm: that is tight and I can't tighten it anymore. The problem seems to be inside the pedal spindle or something. Can you open the pedal? I'm not sure I see how, and also, on the ultegra pedals, they have those grey toothed plastic things near where the crank thread is. What is its purpose. On the right side it spins with the pedal. On the left side, it stays with the crank arm when you spin the pedal. Does this have anything to do with the fact that the left side is loose? Thanks.
oh, that's a problem.Jon(unreg)

It sounds like the spindle lockring (the grey bit) is either loose or broken. Try tightening it back down by hand (I believe the left is reverse-threaded, so check the lockring it self. There's an arrow on it that shows the proper direction)
You should be able to get a lockring tool for a few bucks, or maybe free at the shop. It's just a piece of plastic that fits the lockring, and can be turned with headset wrench. They used to be included with new pedals, but I guess the profit margins got too thin or something. www.biketoolsetc.com will also have them; it's where I got mine.
Hopefully this is the only problem, since if the lockring is broken, you have a major repair job on your hands. The bearings are listed as "cartridge), but in reality it;s a bunch of tiny little ball bearings, that need to be removed to get the new lockring in place. Probably best left to a shop, unless you have lots of free time and patience. Good luck. Jon
