Creaking Bars(3 posts)

Creaking BarsDan Q

My bars are creaking with every hard pull I give them on hills. This occurs when on the drops and hoods, so it is not related to the levers. I have a Syncros quill stem and Salsa Pro Road bar. I have greased the bar clamping bolt, stem bolt, and inside of the steerer tube but it has not helped. What am I missing?

First, make sure you know where the noise is coming from - sometimes the saddle rails/seatpost get involved. My experience has been that the quill stem setup is problematic. It needs some clearence to be installed removed and the binder mechanism only operates on the end leaving the upper section inside the steerer tube to move about. since you've already tried the grease bit I guess using some kind of shim stock might work. It comes in sheets of various thicknesses and can be cut, shaped, and wrapped. Another, more expensive, alternative is to go threadless.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago with an OCLV and Ritchey WCS stem/3ttt Prima 199 bar. I greased everything, self included, before I discovered the front wheel skewer, Helium wheel, needed to be a little (about 1/4 turn) tighter. Really pi**ed me off I didn't check the easy stuff first.
