Getting adhesive off handlebars(5 posts)

Getting adhesive off handlebarsDave Bisers
May 9, 2001 3:19 PM
I'm putting new tape on my handlebars. The previous owner of my bike put electrical tape on the bars. I was just wondering what the best way to get off all the old adhesive from the bars.
Thanks,
Dave Bisers
WD-40 should do it, or just wrap over it (nm)Retro

you might try using lighter fluid. Not the kind for the grill- the kind that you would get for a cigarette lighter.

Go to the hardware store and get a pint of acetone. Works really well at breaking down adhesives from stickers and the like. Costs about $3.00. Be careful, it will take paint off. Also automotive bug and tar remover will work. It is slower, costs more, but will not harm paint.

Go to a hardware store or a Home Depot. Purchase Motsenbocker's Lift Off #2. It's a very common gum and adhesive remover. Will not harm most finishes.
