Upgrading 1" threaded HS w/cartridge type-?(3 posts)

Upgrading 1" threaded HS w/cartridge type-?dave123g

Ok ,I'm replacing the old ball bearing HS with a Ultegra cartridge style. My problem is that my 1" threaded fork steer tube is about 5mm too short for the new style HS. No one warned me about this. Does anyone make a HS (cartridge type) that is shorter or a smaller stack height? I really don't want to buy a new fork or go back to the BB type HS. Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

Not sure what stack height you need, but there aren't many real low stack height threaded systems out there (which are readily available) - the King gripnut based headset has a 33mm stack height (must be the gripnut - the standard 2-nut version has a 38mm stack height). I believe the american classic has a 33mm stack height, and if you can find them, the Tange headsets all have pretty low stack heights (Supergo had the Tange technoglide cartridge bearing headset a while back, but it's not on their website any more - maybe give them a call?)
5mm is a lot, any spacers in there?dave

The Ultegra headset has a stack height of 37.6mm. A Chris King fits 33 to 38mm stack height. Campy's are 36.5 (not cartridge).

Are you sure you haven't put in an old spacer below the locknut?
