Can an old early 90's Shimano Altus shift a triple? Where could I find out this info?
TIA
Dave

I'm all but positive it will have enough lateral tavel to handle the triple.

If you have a problem, I'd guess it will be more likely related to the size of the big chainring. The curve of the derailleur cage has to match the circumference of the big chainring pretty closely. If it doesn't you have to mount the derailleur way high on the seat tube. It might not shift very well and the chain might drag on the derailleur cage in the little/big combination.

Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

Thanks for the reply. Your concerns proved very accurate. Chain drag in the small ring due to a too short cage. I found a used Deore for $10 with a long cage. Worked great. Thanks again
