Dura-Ace Crank upgrade(3 posts)

Dura-Ace Crank upgradeWalt
Apr 26, 2001 11:52 AM
I have an opportunity to upgrade from a 105 to a Dura Ace Crankset for around $150 plus the cost of a bottom bracket. I have a 2001 Cannondale R800 full 105 groupo. The question I have is would this upgrade make a noticable difference in performance or would it just stroke my ego??
Any comments or oppinions are welcome.
Thanks
No need for a new BBJ.S.

I not sure but I think that your 105 9-speed BB should work with a Dura-ace crank. Dura-Ace cranks are noticibly stiffer and 120g lighter than 105 and for $150.00 I'd go for it. Heck, a new set of Dura-Ace rings is $100.00

I actually did the exact same upgrade (same bike even) a couple of months ago. I would recommend the change, as the actual cost is probably closer to $100 or less, because you can resell the 105 crank afterwards. I would recommend upgrading the bb as well, as the 105 bottom bracket feels kind of crappy imho (just not that smooth and fairly heavy). I would recommend upgrading to the Ultegra bb, which you can get at supergo for $30, and skip the dura-ace bb, unless you enjoy tedious maintenance. The ultegra feels a lot smoother than the 105 and is also lighter, so as long as you're upgrading, i would switch out the bb as well.
