I realise this is a road bike forum but this merits mentioning. About six months ago I replaced my 2 year old XTR hollow BB with one of the new XTR cartridge BB's, my main reason was that I had to rebuild the old one every six months or so and figured cartridge would last longer as I have used Ultegra with good luck. Well It's been six months and the cartridge BB is junk, the spindle has so much play that it is unrideable(and not adjustable). Well, pull out the over 2 year old BB, rebuild and reinstall. So much for cartridge BB's being bulletproof. Also, I live in So. Cal, never ride in rain and never power wash my bikes. It appears cartridge may not be the best choice for harsh conditions.

Shimano's cartridge BB may not be that durable, but a good cartridge system is better than loose balls & rollers. Since their design is patented you have only one choice in the roadbike world while there are several alternatives in MTB, including ISIS.

BTW - I've heard of people using the DA TRACK BB - supposed to be lighter than Ultegra and more durable than DA. Any experience out there?

I do not know the precise details of your bottom bracket siruation, but your experience is not really typical. I have seen bikes absolutely neglected--I mean zero maintenance--and when that crankset comes off...the cartridge bottom bracket is beautiful. so...to all the readers...remember that this is not common. One question...did you install the BB yourself, or was it someone else?
I did it myselfJ.S.

What would that have to do with it?
