Creaky Ultegra BB(9 posts)

Creaky Ultegra BBNPedro

I have a fairly new Ultegra Bottom Bracket (less than 500 miles on it / less than two months old)and it started creaking today. I'm not sure if it's the bearings or crank arm or what. What is typically the cause of creaking in the Ultegra BB's and any suggested remedies?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You didn't say what kind of bike you have, so start at the pedals and work all the way to the rear tire. Seriously. It's most likely that the BB cartridge is moving slightly in the shell and wrapping teflon tape around the trheads and torquing it to spec will fix it. However, almost anything in the drive train can cause a very similar noise and sometimes you are very surprised when you find the actual cause. With a little bit of logic and some wheel swapping you should be able to zero in on it quickly. Since the bike is so new I'd dump the problem into the lap of the LBS where you bought it (assuming that's how you obtained it). Had it been a DA BB I'd advise you to tear it appart since it's not "sealed" and a bit problematic to keep adjusted. Plese let us know when you locate the culprit - it's always interesting to hear the source.

Are you sure it's the BB? Loose and dry chain-ring bolts, a loose crank arm or loose pedals can make similar creaks and sometimes it's hard to tell where the sounds is coming from. I'd try all those easy fixes first before tearing into the bottom bracket. It may save you some unnecessary hassle.

you've stated that you haven't ridden too many miles...my experience has been that you should look for the simplest solution first...in this case, that might very well be that your FAG type bottom bracket simply needs to be tightened into the bottom bracket shell...after a few hundred miles, these types of cartridge bottom brackets will begin to creak, and all they need (often times) is a little wrenching.

Thanks for the help...this points me in the right direction (I hope)I'll do a little more investigating to make sure it, in fact is the BB, and check out the other possible culprits.

Do let us know what the problem is when you figure it out. Most of us have had creaks or squeeks we couldn't quite pin down at first.

Try to clean and lube the seat post. Ever time I have a mysterious creak that I think is coming from the BB, the seatpost is usually the problem.

Found this to be the source this weekend after rebuilding my DA BB! the tip was that the "clicking" only happend when I was seated, which was most of the time.

I can't say exaclty what the culprit was, because I tried a couple of the quick fixes suggested and then tried it out...the creaking is gone. It wasn't the seat post -- the creaking happened when I was out of the saddle.
I removed the pedals, greased the threads, and reinstalled (tight), then I tightened the crank bolts (though they didn't really seem to budge), and I cleaned and lubed the whole chain/sprocket mech.
Quiet as a mouse.
Thanks, again.
