Shimano vs. Campagnolo(4 posts)

Shimano vs. CampagnoloJasmine

First off, I hope to get many responses to my question because it is definetly an opinion question.

Question: What is the difference between Shimano and Campagnolo in terms of performance? Also how does each level of campagnolo and shimano rank against eachother. For example (Record vs. Durace). Also is Mirage (Campagnolo) and Soro (Shimano)eachother's equivalent in the companies hierarchy?

Thank you

To the best of my understanding, Shimano and Campy perform about the same. I did however, speak to my LBS a few days ago and posed the same question. Her reply was that Campy can be rebuilt while Shimano is a throw away so in the long run Campy is probably a better investment. Campy tends to be a bit more expensive but you don't have to throw away the whole set up if something goes wrong.

Perhaps the easiest way to compare is to look for bikes at similar "price points" in different manufacturers' lines. Since there are several factors that can influence the price of a bike, look for bikes that are roughly comparable (frame material, other components). This will give you a pretty good feel where the groups rank. You'll never get consensus on what is "comparable" since Campy fans will say that Chorus and Dura-Ace are equivalent, and Shimano fans will say that Campy is simply over priced.

With all due respect, this topic has been bantered around the message boards dozens if not hundreds of times.

Realizing that many people post questions without doing a search, I would suggest that you do a search using Google, or some other universal search machine that includes newsgroups.

The hits and the information received will be more informative than a single web site forum.

If specific questions about responses occur, feel free to post them. This approach will provide a more universal and helpful understanding of the differences in the components.

From my point of view, having used them both, there is no perceivable difference in the high end group.
