old mavic pedals/Look cleats(4 posts)

old mavic pedals/Look cleatssteeveo

I salvaged a 10-year-old pair of Mavic clipless pedals (Look-type)
from an old touring bike. The guy who sold me the bike said he always used the black Look-type cleats (no float) because he thought the red Look-type cleats (with float) would not work with Mavic pedals. I can't see any reason for that to be true. Does
anyone know for sure?

Look on the bottom of the pedal. Is there an indexed adjustment? If so the virtue of these Mavic pedals is that the adjustment on the pedal permits lateral rotation of up to 5 degrees both left and right. Because of this they came only with fixed Black cleats as the Red ARC cleat is unnecessary. Hope this helps.

The guy may be right. I have some old Shimano/Look pedals which use black cleats and have the float in the pedal. I thought I could use red cleats if I locked out the float, as the pedal allows. Not so. The red cleats just don't work right either with or without the pedal float engaged.

If you need a set of nearly-new black Look cleats of similar vintage, complete with hardware, e-mail your snail-mail address to me and you can have them. I don't have any Look pedals anymore, and these have been hanging out in the bottom of my spare parts box for a very long time.
