Ultegra 9 spd derailleur w/7 spd cassette plus other querieslinguinee

Hello everyone. A few questions: If I upgrade my Shimano RX 100 (7 sp) derailleurs to Utlegra components (9 speed, short cage rear, ), will the old RSX-100 7 spd downtube shifters work properly with the Ultegra derailleurs. ie. Will the spacing between the cogs on my 7 spd rear cassette mesh with the lateral distance the Utlegra (rear) derailleur moves when shifted by the old RSX 100 downtube shifter?

On a related note: My bike's wheelset was built with 7 speed hubs and I've no compelling need for extra cogs. I plan to build a spare wheelset with some Ultegra 9 speed hubs I scored cheaply and would like the two wheelsets to be easily interchangeable. Are there any considerations (aside from inserting a spacer behind the cassette and the adjusting the rear derailleur accordingly) in mounting a 7 speed Shimano cassette on an 8/9 speed ultegra hub?

thank you

While upgrading a 7 spd bike, I first changed the wheels/hubs. I used a 7 spd 105 derail. and shifters with a 7 spd cassette and spacer on a 9 spd Ultegra hub. No problems. I then switched to a 9 spd Ultegra rear derail. No problems. Next came 9 spd Ultegra STI shifters, it was shiftable but with 9 spd shifters and only a 7 spd cassette, there were problems. I quickly got a 9 spd cassette and chain and it was fine. Next was 9 spd chain rings.

I got all the parts from close-outs or on-line classifieds and probably saved 50% off mail-order prices. I can't even guess how much saved compared to LBS retail.

The only concern you might have with the spare hubs is the rea spacing, the 9 sp hubs are wider than the 7sp. Usually there is no problem with widening the stays enough to put a wider hub in you might run into trouble when you keep switching back and forth between wide and narrow. TTFN

Yes I anticipate there may be some difficulty when switching from one assembled wheelset to another, but as long as it's confined to rear derailleur adjustments, I can stomach that for the time being.

Who knows, I may go SLM's route and upgrade the whole shebang using close out sale items...

thanks for your responses folks
