Shimano BB ?(7 posts)

Shimano BB ?Hap
Apr 3, 2001 5:37 AM
I've been using Shimano 600 8 sp STI componantry and I'm upgrading to 9 speed. Amoung other things, I purchased a New Dura Ace crankset. Will I need to replace my 600 BB or not? I know dura ace cranks are compatable with Ultegra BB's, but I don't know if my old 600 is the same Current Ultegra. My BB is 9 years old and maybe I should replace it anyway. Also, it seems that I have heard negative things about DA BB's, so if I do replace it, is Ultegra prefered?

Thanks, Hap

You need a new Splined BB to go with the splined cranks. Some say the DA BB isn't worth the hassle, and that the ultegra is the way to go.

I will assume that you purchased the new 2000 or 2001 9-speed Dura Ace cranks (# 7700). If so, then you will need to replace your BB as the 600 BB will not work with the new Dura Ace or Ultegra cranks. The 600 BB has a square taper while the newer Shimano cranks and BB's have a splined BB. If you have the BB tool that removes the 600 BB, then...sorry to inform you...you will need to buy a new one that is designed to remove/install the new splined BB.

I would suggest using an Ultegra splined BB instead of the Dura Ace. The Ultegra BB is pretty much bullet-proof install-it-and-forget-it. Park Tool's website has all the info you will need to make the switch and what tools are required. I think their website is http://www.parktool.com and there will be a "button" on the left that says "workshop" and that is where you want to go. Good Luck!
